KARITÉ
SHEA BUTTER
TRO TRO TRADING COMPANY
SHEA BUTTER IS 100% NATURAL AND ORGANIC. How is Karité Shea Butter Made? First, the nuts are collected by village women in Northern Ghana from wild Shea, or Karité trees. The sweet fruit surrounding the nut is a popular treat. The nuts are parboiled in a cauldron over a wood fire. This helps to remove the outer shell, and is done by hand. The kernel is air dried on rooftops or spread on the earth. The women painstakingly pound the dried kernels with stones before they are returned to the fire to be roasted. Piled in large basins, the women carry these on their heads to the grinding mill. The next day they take a quantity of mash, adding small amounts of water and begin to whip and beat the mixture by hand. After a few hours, the chocolate color begins to change as the fat rises to the surface. Finally the Shea fat is heated to remove any liquid, filtered and cooled. The whole process can take more than 20 hours. Shea Butter processing gives the Talensi women a necessary income in addition to their subsistence farming. Your purchase helps keep Shea Butter production sustainable. How is Shea Butter Used in Africa? West Africans use shea butter as a cooking fat, a body moisturizer, healing agent for nasal congestion, a topical ointment for burns and cuts, hair cream and they even mix it with ground millet and chili pepper for a high calorie meal. Karité Shea Butter Soap Our soap is made by a Community Based Organization called “Peal Deng” in Northern Ghana. During a health education program presented for the women of the area, disease, germs and the prevention of such were discussed. The importance of washing with soap was a key issue. Complaining that they had no money to buy soap, the soap making co-op was born. Using funds donated by Amnesty International students, the women bought the supplies needed to create their own soap using the local oils of shea butter and palm oil. While much of the soap remains in Africa for the women to sell at market and use for themselves, Tro Tro Trading Company has also imported a portion of soap to sell here in the United States.
