Supporting sustainable income generation in Ghana, West Africa

Linda with Esther, a fabric merchant in AccraKirstin with Community Based Organization, "Peal Deng"Tro-Tro Trading Company is a small business dedicated to providing artisans in Ghana and West Africa an international market venue. All of our items are Fair Trade Federation Certified and 10% of our proceeds are channeled back into the surrounding communities around Tongo, near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana. We are very much involved in development projects that benefit the community we live in. Working with Rotary International, this year saw the construction of a borehole (water source) and the dredging of three ponds. We have also assisted in sports programs, startup shea butter and soap  projects for local women and school programs. Our Peace Corps background has provided us with experience in International Development skills. Because we are based in Northern Ghana for part of the year, when we come to the United States we raise money by holding sales in various locations and with internet sales. We also do fundraising in order to support projects in the area that we live in.

We are continually trying to source out new products and are working with artisans to eliminate the middle-man. This ensures fair value for all. Most of our suppliers are family run businesses, conducted with integrity. We have yet to witness what the Western world calls a “sweat shop” in West Africa.

Our work in Ghana is unaffiliated with any Non Government Organization or Non Profit. The work and projects we are involved in are fueled by proceeds and sales of handicraft. We are volunteers in the true sense of the word, this being our full time occupation.

We sell Ewe and Ashanti Kente Cloth, Krobo beads, Trade beads, Bolgatanga baskets, Tuareg jewelry, handmade jewelry, leatherwork and other West African handmade items.
